Nirvana free essay sample

Silvery outlines, kissed by the moon, and their eerily alluring reflections fade into a scene of resplendent beauty and quiescence at sunrise as the world comes to life; a happy little courtyard, a pond, and a winding series of brightly colored yet discrete buildings fade from view. My home will be a garden; my garden, a home for family, friends, and strangers in need. I first fell in love with the idea while visiting the Chinese Garden of Friendship, built in 1988 for Australia’s bicentennial in Sydney’s Darling Harbor. Here, existence found its representation through architecture, landscape, and natural aura. Paths ran from one building to the next in a perfectly fluid motion unpredictable yet wholly satisfying. Strong gray stone, warm dark wood, and textured plaster walls came together with masterfully placed water courses, symbolic sculpture, and plants to evoke a reverence for life. As a lover of architecture and nature, I was enthralled by these spaces. We will write a custom essay sample on Nirvana or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I remember walking into a courtyard surrounded by nine foot walls of plaster and slate tiles on three sides, while a tantalizing stream and laughing waterfall emphasized the taste of rain that pervaded each breath of air. Beautiful bamboos, willows, lotus, and carefully placed craggy stones known as Taihu guided the eye and mind toward a bench and a building with an open door beyond. Across the pond, through a moon gate flanked by carved dragons I could see a multi-storied Chinese teahouse on a limestone hill. Blue tiles of a pagoda resembling a ship sparkled under the sunlight as the fish began sampling the morning mist in anticipation of the rain, creating minute ripples. With a far-off rumble, an autumn rain pitter-pattered, then increased. My family and I ran for shelter in the Scholar’s Study. There, stillness enveloped me. Calmness with a pulsating undercurrent of excitement, security with a certain enigmatic flavor, nature as one with the created are what I encountered within that hectare of garden. There were definitely similarities between this garden in Sydney and me. Both of us are so full of life, so overflowing with vibrancy and the urge to explore. We are both entranced by the suppleness of nature. I can see myself one day sitting on a bridge watching the fish, or living with friends and family enjoying a microcosm of earth’s wonders. I want to share my dream with the world by becoming an architect; I want to introduce humanity to an Eden of hope for a tangible nirvana. William Blake Romantic Master an Example of the Topic Literature Essays by

William Blake: Romantic Master William Blake was an 18th and 19th century British Romanticist poet who created many of his powerful literary works in the form of beautiful engravings, yet celebrating little success in publishing and artistry during his own lifetime (Gilchrist, 2008). Despite his relative lack of popularity during his own time, Blake has left a literary legacy to the art form of poetry and craftsmanship, and stands as one of the masters of the Romantic movement. Although Blake was married and devoted to his wife, he lived almost in a state of poverty during his lifetime, and his wife bore no children. Looked upon as a sort of eccentric madman, Blake did study and socialize within the London artistic circuit. Need essay sample on "William Blake: Romantic Master" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed He was devoted to the concepts within the New Testament and felt very spiritually as well as artistically inclined, believing that he could commune with angels and the dead. In regard to social justice, he abhorred all type of oppression, and stood firm for sexual and racial equality and justice. In keeping with the Romantic inclination to define beauty, Blake was mystically enthralled by the opposing concepts of good and evil, innocence and experience, and heaven and hell. In his primary or most popular works of literature entitled Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, Blake depicts the differences between the happy and innocent people and the shameful and guilty ones. In Songs of Innocence, Blake wrote a poem called The Lamb, which highlights the life and experiences of the innocent and divine child. This work of poetry, like many of his others, is written like a nursery rhyme, with simple and repetitive language and rhymes. The Lamb embraces the theme of innocence and celebrates the meek and mild little child, making direct references to God through Jesus Christ by use of the uppercase He. Referencing himself as well as the reader, Blake makes confidence statements that both he and the reader are called to be like Jesus and are loved and blessed by God, the symbol of the lamb. In this celebration of innocence, Blake, the writer, the speaker, proclaims himself and the child reader as belonging to the spiritual and divine realm as children of God. He states with assurance that We are called by His name, Little lamb, God bless thee!, striking a comforting and nurturing tone. By the use of rhyme and allusion, repetition and regular rhythm with 6 or 7 beats per line, Blake creates a simple and sing-song music with his words, tying up the beginning and end of his poetry with verbal and metric similarities and balance. In one of Blakes poems from Songs of Experience, Blake tells the darker tale of the Tyger. Again, Blake addresses the idea of the spiritual world, however, this time, it is the rejection of goodness and the divine, making way for evil. Here, Blake is far from self assured and casts a wary eye to the tiger who walks the forests of the night. He questions the tiger and his purpose in the world, or rather he questions the maker of the tiger, the immortal hand or eye which framed the tigers fearful symmetry. Blake seems unable to reconcile the fear in the heart with the nature of the tiger, and frames the tiger as an evil beast, the symbol of the devil, far from the ideal lamb, the more soothing and familiar image of goodness. The rhythm of this poem is a bit longer, with 7 or 8 beats per line, also filled with rhyme and allusion, such as these two lines What the anvil? what dread grasp, Dare its deadly terrors clasp? The confidence heard in The Lamb is lost when reading The Tyger, and the reader is left wondering if Blake sees no divinity in things which are strong or resolute, characteristics of the natural beast of the tiger animal. Instead of viewing the tiger as a natural and spiritual creature, the tiger is framed by Blake as being suspicious and lacking in meaning and purpose, drawing an analogy to the questionable actions of evil people and the twist(ed) sinews (of their) hearts. In another Song of Experience, The Angel, Blake tells the tale of the angel who came to visit him, the immortal messenger to tries to communicate with a resistant and unappreciative mortal. Again with rhythms of 7 and 8 beats per line, Blake carves out a heart wrenching poem, where he is the old man who is unable to hear the beautiful calls of the angels, who instead bristles defiantly, Soon my angel came again, I was armed, he came in vain. Here, both the rhyme and allusion so typical of Blake are eloquently crafted in the voice of a character, Blake himself, who stubbornly and blankly refuses the good will and good nature of God. In this poem, Blake is weeping, unable to be consoled, despite Gods constant consolation, And I wept both night and day, And he wiped my tears away; And I wept both day and night, And hid from him my heart's delight. The character struggles with God in a battle of wills, the speaker forcing his own will, despite the personal agony it creates and despite his separation from the will of God. Blake hides himself from God and rejects the nurturing presence offered to him, huddling in a puddle of self inflicted sorrow. The stark yet simple morality presented by Blake is carved out through his words and through his actual art work in masterful elegance. Blake is able to both offer a picture of the person who is in tune with the holistic goodness of the universe as well as to illuminate the life struggles of the individual who is separated from God through his own ignorance and stupidity. Although Blake touches on both types of characters, he does generate sympathy in the reader for all of his spiritual successes and failures. Perhaps drawing on his own attempts to remain connected to God and the romance of being united with the divine, Blake presents the battle of morality with dignity in humanism and passion in desiring to touch the heartbeat of divinity through correct actions. State v. Mary Doherty essays

State v. Mary Doherty essays In the early part of the 19th Century, court cases in which young people were charged with serious crimes came out much differently than they would by todays standards. In fact in some cases children under the age of 14 were not convicted of crimes that they had obviously committed because they were believed to be incapable of testifying accurately. In other cases young people (children) were not allowed to testify because it was thought that they were too young to understand what they were charged with. Courts really didnt seem to know what to do with young criminals during that period. According to Holly Brewers book Birth or Consent: Children, Law, and the Anglo-American Revolution in Authority (Brewer, 2005, p. 220), state superior court cases show todays researchers that there was a profound transformation in attitudes toward culpability and an accused young persons age was becoming critical, in the early 19th Century, to not only deciding what the punishment should be, but guilt itself (Brewer, p. 220). In fact, Brewer writes, most criminal court decisions set fourteen as the minimum age for witness testimony in criminal cases. Mary Doherty was either twelve or thirteen years of age when she allegedly killed her father with an axe in Tennessee in 1806; accounts differ as to whether she was twelve or thirteen. She was charged with murdering her father, chopping up his body and burying the body parts under the floorboards of the house. According to Brewers account, the father was a drunkard, and two of his four children had run away, while Mary, the oldest, had stayed home. The suggestion is that the father was possibly abusive, although there was no evidence available to verify that. It was known that Michael Dohertys wife was not in the family for some reason when this horrific event took place. Brewer writes that there was blood on the axe, in Michael Dohe...

Team Working and Team Leadership are just 'idealised' managerial and Essay

Team Working and Team Leadership are just 'idealised' managerial and orthodox OB textbooks aspirations - Essay Example 16). According to Mullins in Original Emphasis, leadership is defined as ‘a relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people.’ Mainly, there are two schools for the leadership, while one states that â€Å"good leaders are made not born† and the other states that â€Å"good leaders are born not made.† The two schools have their own supporting cases to claim that they are right. But in any situation the most important element of leadership is communication. Proper communication through any mode between leader and followers will make the process easy. The leadership is a quality achieved by desire and willpower. Endless process of self-study, education, training and experience is necessary for effective leadership. Here is one best example from an academic review about effective leadership. It states that â€Å"leader should primarily work through and with other people. In addition, effective leader should also help in establishing the conditions that enable their subordinates to be motivated and effective part of the organisation and the society. Aside from this, it can also be said that an effective leader should also credible. Credibility should always be considered as the foundation of  leadership. A leader should be credible for him to lead. Furthermore, to become a good leader, one must be honest, competent, aspiring and have the quality of having forward-looking approach.  In line with the political and business view, effective leadership proves to be quite beneficial. Effective leaders aids in efficiently meeting job-related demands. In addition, it also helps in creating higher-performing teams, as well as fostering renewed loyalty and commitment among the subordinates. However, this so-called effective leadership is not that easy to achieve. Effective leaders entail a lot of hard work, dedication, and other factors to mould an individual to become an efficient leader and to become a greater part of the success of the organisation† (Leadership Case Problem – Latham’s Leadership Lessons Leadership & Management 2011). Some leaders are getting best results from their team members or from the followers while some of them getting poor efforts. This is happening not only because of the poor employee skills, different kinds of leadership techniques and styles also have a part in it. These are the all things that we can understand from the orthodox text book aspiration of the Organizational Behavior Studies. But in reality, the management is always ends up with dissatisfied work groups and frustrated team leaders. Problems in Team Working: The main reason behind this is individual dysfunctional conflicts which decrease the creativity as well as productivity of the company. Working under poor leadership can be too frustrating and intimidating. If the team members are not confident about their leader what they should do? Certainly they will not be mot ivated or inspired by the leader’s activity. The important dysfunctional activities found in corporate are defensiveness, reluctance, romantic idealism, loss of confidence and disrespect. Some other problems in Team work are, Self Centeredness: Self centeredness is nothing but selfishness. These people always think about themselves only and that damages the interest of team. In the war novel, A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway demonstrates that it is a writers job to convey some sort of truth to the reader through the setting of the novel. This novel takes place during a time of war and shows what war is like, realistically. For a war novel, there is not a lot of fighting but instead more of getting from one place to another and the situations that occur in the interim. This portrays a truth to the reader because it shows how war is in reality and that it is not all death and destruction. Hemingway expresses the emotions of the characters accurately for time of war and conditions or situations the characters are put into. The author shows us the characters interact with each other and how they deal with the war surrounding them. For example, in Book III of the novel, the priest says that people that summer finally realized the war and that people were gentler because they had been beaten. This, truthfully, shows how war affects people and their emotions because it shows how they are disappointed. Through the setting of the play, Hemingway tells the truth by stating that people are trapped biologically because of their setting and the fact that it is human condition. In the novel, Frederic feels trapped because of Catherines pregnancy. In the novel, A Farwell to Arms, the author establishes that a writers job is to deliver accuracy and truth to the audience of the piece of work through characterization in the novel. Hemingway shows the reader what war can do to a person. He shows this through Frederics personality and his change throughout the story. Frederic went from an innocent man who joined the army because he was in Italy at the time and spoke the language and after a lot of experience becomes cynical. This work of literature also shows how war can be dehumanizing on an individual. In Book III, Frederic shoots at a sergeant and thinks nothing of killing another human being because thats what occurs in war. Another way that the author tells truth in this novel is by showing that some characters keep their morals and human values. For example, in Book III, Frederic stops his fellow officers from harassing the two young girls who needed a ride. During the war times, most men did not have respect for their fellow people but Hemingway shows the reader that a select few fight to keep their morals straight. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee confirms that a writers job is to tell the reader the truth through the themes of this novel. One theme of this novel is racism; the townspeople are prejudice towards Tom Robinson because hes black. Even though, many know and believe that he is innocent and he did not rape Mayella they still blame him and find him guilty in court. Another theme of this novel, that shows truth as well, is the coexistence of good and bad. Harper Lee shows his reader that in his story, just like it is in the real world, good and bad exists. The good in this story is Atticus and him trying to fight for Tom and stands up for him as his attorney to show he supports him even though the town turns against him and he knows he cant win. The bad in this story is racism and inequality. The author of this novel conveys a lot of truth because these problems still occur to this day in real life situations. Another important theme that expresses truth to us from the author is innocence and the loss of that innocence. When the novel begins, Scout and Jem seem very innocent to the evil in the world, mostly because they had not ever witnessed it. After they see the racism, prejudice and unjust treatment that are put onto many characters they start to lose that childlike innocence. This is a strong truth, to this day. Young innocent people are losing and missing out on a lot because of their environment and surroundings. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, the author shows the audience that the writers job is to distribute the truth to the reader through, the literary element, of setting. This story takes place in Maycomb, Alabama. Maycomb is home to many complacent, racist and prejudice people. The people of Maycomb try to ignore the truth that is plain to see by not acting on it. They let people in the town, who may be of different skin color like Tom Robinson, be stepped on and treated unfairly just because of his skin tone while many of the people of the town know he is innocent. During the course of the novel, the Great Depression is occurring. This sets the stage for poverty to be a strong point in this story. The characters make this a separation element. Another factor of setting that expresses truth in this novel being in the South in these days. The South had many rules and segregation laws concerning black citizens and white citizens. This caused an increase in the racism. As shown above, the two novels, A Farewell to Arms and To Kill A Mockingbird, both have many literary elements that help the author to express truth in his/her literary work. Some of these literary elements were setting, characterization and theme among many others.

Free Essays on Terrorism: Give Peace a Chance :: September 11 Terrorism Essays

Give Peace a Chance Since the horrible tragedy that occurred on September 11th, Americans are brainstorming for ideas on how to fight terrorism. Minds are collaborating on what can be done to reconcile the West in the minds of Islamic nations. Many strategies for attaining peace have been introduced, and steps are being made toward the appeasement of differences. The ideas for peacemaking that have already been set in motion will be discussed in Section 1, and new suggestions for reconciliation will be introduced in Section 2. SECTION 1: Both political and private associations in the United States have introduced wonderful ideas that have begun the process of reconciliation between Islam and the West. In the political faction, Bush visited a mosque after the terrorist attacks to show support for American Muslims. He declared that terrorism "is not the true faith of Islam. That's not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don't represent peace-they represent evil and war." (http://www.beliefnet.com/). This act gained Bush the support of American Muslims who had been persecuted since the attacks. It also served as a testimony for other Muslim countries that this war was not a religious matter. Unfortunately, since Bush's demonstration, Osama bin Laden has misled Muslims into believing this is indeed a jihad. In a speech he gave on November 3rd, he declares, "It is a question of faith, not a war against terrorism, as Bush and Blair try to depict it" (http://news.bbc.co.uk/). One of Osama bin Laden's top lieutenants explained, "The root of terrorism is in the conflict in Palestine." It is believed that if war stops in the Middle East, more than half the battle of ending terrorism is won. Previously, the United States has sided with the Israelites over the Palestinians. Secretary of State Colin Powell made a speech indicating that Bush is taking a more diplomatic stance in bringing peace to the Middle East. Instead of being exceedingly pro-Israel, the speech was directed at both sides and created an emotional appeal each could relate to (New York Times Nov. 15th). This new position will allow each side to feel comfortable in the negotiation process and will hopefully get a step closer to peace. When the United Stated defeated the Taliban, it gained the respect of Afghanis. Although there were a few mis-hits in the bombings, Afghanis realize that all the targets were directed at military sites.

China’s Environmental Issues Essay

China has many environmental issues, severely affecting its biophysical environment as well as human health. Rapid industrialization as well as lax environmental oversight have contributed to the problems. The Chinese government has acknowledged the problems and made various responses, resulting in some improvements, but the responses have been criticized as inadequate. As of 2012 there is increased citizen activism regarding government decisions which are perceived as being environmentally damaging. (Wikipedia) As China’s economic growth continues to blossom in 2007, with the countries GDP hitting 11.4%, alongside China gets hit by an environmental crisis. Sixteen of the world’s twenty most polluted cities are in China. Experts say the Chinese government has made serious efforts to clean up and achieved many of the bid commitments. Beijing’s pledge to host a â€Å"Green Olympics† in the summer of 2008 signaled the country’s willingness to address its environmental problems for example. However, an environmentally sustainable growth rate remains a serious challenge for the country. (http://www.cfr.org/china/chinas-environmental-crisis/p12608) China’s major environmental issues: * Water- China suffers from water shortage and water pollution. About one-third of China’s population lacks access to clean drinking water. s part of its effort to harness the nation’s water supply, China has a large dam-building program with over twenty-five thousand dams nationwide–more than any other nation. The dam projects are not only a high cost in terms of money, but also in farmland loss, ecological damage, and forced migration of millions of people, says the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Jennifer L. Turner, director of its China Environment Forum, in a report for the Jamestown Foundation. * Land- Desertification in China leads to the loss of about 5,800 square miles of grasslands every year, an area roughly the size of Connecticut. The Worldwatch Institute, an environmental watchdog and research organization, reports that excessive farm cultivation, particularly overgrazing, is one of the leading causes of desertification. As the deforestation grows, so do the number of sandstorms; a hundred were expected between 2000 and 2009. Desertification also contributes to China’s air pollution problems, with increasing dust causing a third of China’s air pollution. * Greenhouse gases- In 2008, China surpassed the United States as the largest global emitter of greenhouse gases by volume. (Not per capita however) The increase in China’s emissions is primarily due to the country’s reliance on coal, which accounts for over two-thirds of its energy consumption, contributing to sulfur dioxide emissions causing acid rain.

Feminine Power in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay

Whether young or middle-aged, the female characters in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn played vital roles. They were more a part of the novel’s scenic backdrop, but their function served in shaping the main character(s). The women and girls of the book were stereotypical, teachers, and â€Å"worse† than the males. The female characters were given stereotypical qualities, being depicted from an American man’s point of view. They were perceived as virtuous, innocent, helpless women, needing aid from the male characters. Women’s vulnerability can be made out in chapter eleven of the novel, where Judith Loftus confesses to wanting the assistance of Huck, â€Å"she told me to try for the next one† (Twain 59). Females occupy the back of the novel, seen as â€Å"nagging, providing inspiration, often weeping or hysterical† (Walker 139-153). You can witness this in chapter twenty-eight of the novel, where Huck stumbles upon Mary Jane Wilks, â€Å"she had stopped now, with a folded gown in her lap, and had her face in her hands, crying† (Twain 187). They possessed many assets, including: honesty, compassion, a sense of duty, innocence, and limitation; making them look powerless, as they were in the society of those days. Women were also the teachers of those days. Not only is Huck taught his education by women, but learns the ways of humanity from them as well. Some women, such as the Widow Douglas and Miss Watson, are â€Å"principal female mentors† (Walker 139-153). Huck Finn begins developing more and more traits from the females you see him interacting with. Often he â€Å"tries to run from the civilizing presence of women† (Walker 139-153). This is shown in the final chapter of the novel, â€Å"Aunt Sally she’s going to adopt me and sivilize me and I can’t stand it† (Twain 293). He is educated in school books, societal etiquette, and the Christian faith. You can find these teachings from Miss Watson in chapter one of the novel, â€Å"†¦took a set at me now, with a spelling-book. She worked me middling hard for about an hour†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Twain 3). Lastly, the female characters were of far less import to Twain than the male characters, just as you would’ve seen in the typical culture of his day. Morally, they were better off than men, but they were powerless to society. â€Å"Both the men and the women in the novel illustrate the values of a society that has little regard for human dignity, but the female characters also embody virtues that could redeem that society if the women were empowered to do so† (Walker 139-153). The men tend to be unruly characters, while the women demonstrate high merit. My scrutiny, like Nancy Walker’s, is that the women, though supposed to have been unimportant to the novel, held essential roles. They were stereotyped teachers who had better ethics than the male characters. The book wouldn’t have been complete without them, seeing as they were a large part of Huckleberry Finn’s growth. When to Use the Latin Abbreviations i.e. and e.g.

When to Use the Latin Abbreviations i.e. and e.g. The Latin abbreviations i.e. and e.g. are often confused. When used incorrectly, they achieve the exact opposite of the writers intention, which is to appear learned by using a Latin phrase in place of an English one that means more or less the same thing. Knowing the meanings of e.g. and i.e.- and how to use them correctly- will save you from making foolish errors and make your writing more sophisticated. What Does E.g. Mean? E.g. is short for the Latin exempli gratia, meaning for the sake of example or for example. E.g. is used in places where you might write including, followed by a list of one or more examples. However, e.g. should not be used to introduce an exhaustive list. At the places where I work best, e.g., Starbucks, I have none of the distractions I have at home. [There are lots of coffee shops I like, but Starbucks is an example thats known to most people.] Some of the things he likes to do in his spare time, e.g., racing cars, are dangerous. [Racing cars is dangerous, but it is not this mans only dangerous hobby.] The abbreviation e.g. can be used with more than one example. However, avoid piling on multiple examples and adding etc. at the end. I like coffee shops, e.g., Starbucks and Seattles Best, for getting work done. [Do not write coffee shops, e.g., Starbucks and Seattles Best, etc.] The children of Leda, e.g., Castor and Pollux, were born in pairs. [Leda gave birth to multiple pairs of children, so Castor and Pollux are one example, as would be Helen and Clytemnestra. If Leda had only given birth to one pair of children, e.g. would be used incorrectly here.] What Does I.e. Mean? I.e. is short for the Latin id est, which means that is to say. I.e. takes the place of the English phrases in other words or that is. As opposed to e.g., i.e. is used to specify, describe, or explain something that has already been referred to in the sentence. Im going to the place where I work best, i.e., the coffee shop. [There is only one place that I am claiming is best for my work. By using i.e.,  I am telling you that I am about to specify it.] The most beautiful human in Greek mythology, i.e., Ledas daughter Helen, may have had a unibrow, according to a 2009 book. [Helen, whose beauty launched the Trojan War, is considered the most beautiful woman in Greek mythology. There is no other contender, so we must use i.e.] He wants to take some time off and go to the most relaxing place in the world, i.e., Hawaii. [The man does not want to visit just any relaxing place. He wants to visit the most relaxing place in the world, of which there can only be one.] When to Use E.g. and I.e. While they are both Latin phrases, e.g. and i.e. have very different meanings, and you dont want to confuse them. E.g., meaning for example, is used to introduce one or more possibilities or examples. I.e., meaning that is to say, is used to specify or explain by giving more detailed information. A way to remember the difference is that e.g. opens the door to more possibilities, while i.e. reduces the possibilities to one. I want to do something fun tonight, e.g., go for a walk, watch a movie, play a board game, read a book.I want to do something fun tonight, i.e., watch that movie Ive been waiting to see. In the first sentence, something fun could be any number of activities, so e.g. is used to introduce a few of them. In the second sentence, something fun is one specific activity- watching that movie Ive been waiting to see- so i.e. is used to specify that. Formatting The abbreviations i.e. and e.g. are common enough that they do not require italicization (though the full Latin phrases, if they are written out, should be italicized). Both abbreviations take periods and are followed by a comma in American English. European sources may not use the periods or the comma. It is rare to see i.e. or e.g. at the start of a sentence. If you choose to use one of them there, you must also capitalize the initial letter of the abbreviation. Grammarians will argue over this kind of minutiae all day, so deploy these abbreviations at the head of a sentence only if you must.

Delphi DBGrid MultiSelect (Explanation and Example)

Delphi DBGrid MultiSelect (Explanation and Example) Delphis DBGrid is one of the most widely used DB-aware components in database related applications. Its main purpose is to enable your applications users to manipulate records from a dataset in a tabular grid. One of the lesser known features of the DBGrid component is that it can be set to allow multiple row selection. What this means is that your users can have the ability to select multiple records (rows) from the dataset connected to the grid. Allowing Multiple Selections To enable multiple selection, you only need to set the dgMultiSelect element to True in the Options property. When dgMultiSelect is True, users can select multiple rows in a grid using the following techniques: Ctrl Mouse clickShift Arrow keys The selected rows/records are represented as bookmarks and stored in the grids SelectedRows property. Note that SelectedRows is only useful when the Options property is set to True for both dgMultiSelect and dgRowSelect. On the other hand, when using dgRowSelect (when individual cells cannot be selected) the user wont be able to edit records directly through the grid and, and dgEditing is automatically set to False. The SelectedRows property is an object of type TBookmarkList. We can use the SelectedRows property to, for example: Get the number of rows selectedClear the selection (unselect)Delete all the selected recordsCheck whether a particular record is selected To set dgMultiSelect to True, you can either use the Object Inspector at design time or use a command like this at runtime: DBGrid1.Options: DBGrid1.Options [dgMultiSelect]; dgMultiSelect Example A good situation in which to use dgMultiSelect might be when you need an option to select random records or if you need the sum of the values of the selected fields.   The example below uses ADO components (AdoQuery connected to ADOConnection and DBGrid connected to AdoQuery over DataSource) to display the records from a database table in a DBGrid component. The code uses multiple selection to get the sum of the values in the Size field. Use this sample code if you want to select the entire DBGrid: procedure TForm1.btnDoSumClick(Sender: TObject);var i: Integer; sum : Single;beginif DBGrid1.SelectedRows.Count 0 thenbegin sum : 0; with DBGrid1.DataSource.DataSet dobeginfor i : 0 to DBGrid1.SelectedRows.Count-1 dobegin GotoBookmark(Pointer(DBGrid1.SelectedRows.Items[i])); sum: sum AdoQuery1.FieldByName(Size).AsFloat; end; end; edSizeSum.Text : FloatToStr(sum); endend;

Lastly but not least I would like to thank the University for the opportunity and also all of my teachers (Mr Gerard Buda, Mr Graham Castle, Mr Rod McLennan, Mr Paul Begg, Mr Bassam Bejeirmi, Mr Richard Laing, Mr Neil... Results of the investigations suggest that there is overwhelming evidence to support the hypothesis that modular construction and prefabrication enhance sustainability of the construction industry. Considerations related to affordability of housing, the built environment and products of construction demand use of innovative designs that present judicious use of construction materials with modularisation and prefabrication. However, a need exists to collaborate to develop standardised modular systems for construction, standards for modular construction and flexible systems that enable flexible construction. It is important to note that deployment of highly flexible CAD / CAM systems for manufacturing of prefabricated, modular components is essential for manufacturing of high precision and flexible modular systems, and designers need to emphasise a life-cycle approach for incorporating sustainability, modularisation and prefabrication in designs for construction. Innovation in modular design for construction is all important because a judicious mix of materials for construction, including high embodied energy materials, such as steel, with other fourth-generation materials promises to deliver construction that is sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, comfortable for the users and suited to material reuse after dismantling at the end of its useful life. Thus, it makes sense for builders, architects and engineers to emphasise the use of modular components for construction by incorporating the modular in design and adding to the number of modular components used for various products of construction.

Decision Making within college life Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Decision Making within college life - Term Paper Example Different courses of actions have different consequences and therefore since one cannot experience all these consequences before making a decision, then one should review previous decisions made and their consequences. Decision making is a process that one must undertake at one point in their life time. This therefore means that we all have to make choices. Decision making can be a very difficult process especially when one is under pressure. Young people especially those at the campus level are faced with various decisions to make within the course of their stay in school. Colleges are attended mostly by people between the ages of 19-25 years and these are the so called years of exploration. It is at this stage in life when one has obtained freedom in terms of not being shackled by parental rules such as curfews. While here, these young minds are at a curious stage in their lives. They want to experiment on what their parents have been shielding from them. It is at this point in lif e when most young people experiment with drugs, sex and other things. This paper seeks to discuss decision making in campus with the author including personal experiences. Personal Experiences The author will include some of his personal experiences while in campus in order to better understand decision making. Relationships There are very many relationships that are cultivated while in campus; relationships between lecturers and students, lecturers and subordinate staff, students and the administration and students with other students. Some of these relationships are benefitial to the students while others are detrimental. Take for instance relationships between students and lecturers. The relationship formed could be one of a mentor and a mentee. Such relationships could be very fruitful because the lecturer acts as a guardian and is concerned with the all-round life of the student and not its educational aspect only. Compare this with discreet relationships between these two same parties (lecturer and student) which are more sexual in nature. In campus, these are not uncommon relationships which in most cases are initiated by the students in search for better grades not because they deserve them but because they ‘forgot’ to work hard during the year. Degrees or diplomas obtained through such means are referred to as â€Å"STDs† which stands for- â€Å"Sexually Transmitted Degrees/Diplomas†. When such a student approaches a lecturer in such a manner, wearing skimpily in the hope of seducing him she has made a choice. The question as to whether she has considered the consequences is a different matter. A female student I was well acquainted with decided to pursue such a degree but unknown to her the lecturer was infected by HIV. One day she went for testing and upon discovering that she was positive she became so angry and vowed to take a large number of her fellow students to the grave with her. She went on a revenge mission and sl ept with around 150 men after she was infected. When on her death bed she relased a list of all the men she had sexual relations with. The list included the names of lecturers, subordinate staff and fellow students. The list was pinned on the notice board. This is one of the examples of detrimental relationships and the female student in this case made a choice to be vengeful. She had other options available to her such as forgiving and forgetting. Attribution Theory This theory was

Current Free Speech Doctrine: Will It Work On The Internet? :: essays research papers

The Internet offers a much greater potential for interactive communication between information senders and receivers than the more traditional methods of communication such as newspaper, radio and television. Freedom of speech ascertained by the constitution is not an absolute right. Depending on the medium through which information is delivered various degrees of the freedom to express one's self is protected. Internet communication may be analogous to either a specific existing communication medium or even several. Current free speech protection begins to dissipate as it is applied to the uncertain confines of the newly developed Cyberspace. The traditionalist approach to free speech protection is centered on core values and yields results that are basically neutral so that content allowed through one communication medium is permissible in all media.Freedom of speech and of the press is a basic tenant of United States constitutional law. Perhaps concern for the English use of prior restraint (licensing of press) and seditious libel was the reason for including the first amendment in our bill of rights. When the first amendment became law the printed page was the most widely used non-verbal medium of speech. Speech, as we understand it, involves more than verbal communication. Speecht includes pictures, movies, radio, television and expressive conduct [Shelton v. Tucker, 364 US 479 (1960)]. As technology advanced and additional communication medium developed, speech was given various levels of first amendment protection depending on the medium through which the information was delivered.Cyberspace is a network of computer systems permitting literally millions of people to communicate with one another on an hourly basis. Cyberspace may mirror other types of communication medium singularly or several at one time. Current free speech protection approaches break down when applied to Cyberspace since one may prohibit speech when delivered by one medium but permit identical speech delivered via a different medium. A core values approach protects identical speech regardless of the medium in which it is delivered. So it is a foundation for Cyberspace and promotes development of new technology. That, "Congress shall make no law..., or abridging the freedom of speech", suggests an absolute right to speak. Justice Black dissenting in Konigsberg felt that freedom of speech was absolute [Konigsberg v. State Bar of California, 366 US 36 (1961)]. Justice Harlan writing for the majority rejected an absolute right, noting that protected freedom of speech was less than an unlimited license to talk.

Introduction of Tourism Essay

God’s earth in all its fullness and beauty is for the people, Thomas Cook Yes god’s earth is very charming and beautiful ones. Travel from the ancient time has held a fascination for mankind . The urge to explore new places and seek a change of environment is not new. In all the epics whether it is â€Å"The Ramayana’’ or â€Å"The Mahabharata† or â€Å"The Bible† every where travel has been mentioned. nly reasons were different. Somewhere travel was to escape from one to another because of cruel king and somewhere it was because of parent’s order or a condition in gambling . But there is no doubt that rapid development in the means of transport and communication has made the whole world practically one neighborhood and has made travel an easy affair. â€Å"Tourism is fourth Extension of Modern Economics† Frayad According to a study Conducted by the Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates (WEFA group ) on behalf of the American Express Travel Related service company â€Å"Travel and Tourism is the largest industry in the world in terms of employment in almost every country of the world† The study further points out that â€Å"Travel and tourism employment investment output and value added exceed those of such major industries as steel automobiles textiles and electronic in Virtually every country† The estimates about tourist says that the numbers of tourist leaving their homes is 694 millions in 2001 and this number likely to swell to 1600 millions by 2020 and the receipts from it are estimated to Cross $ 2000 billion. One of the leading futurologists in the world Hermann Khan Predicting a golden era for tourism says â€Å"In sum I see a very bright future ahead for tourism and travel industry. There are clouds on the horizon to be sure but †¦.. it will become a larger giant than it already is in the next 50years. Today the benefits of tourism are not to be judged in terms of economic enefits alone Tourism has wider implications encompassing not only economic benefits but also social and cultural benefits as well. From the social and cultural point of view there is enough evidence to support the fact that tourism and travel unquestionably produces an interaction between the cultural customs of the visitors and those of the host population. Cultural tourism is a fertile g round for exercising creative talents, festering special kinds of relations between the visitors and the host population between the tourists and the host environment. The economic benefits to a country by way which of earning foreign exchange on the other hand are however the prime motive for various nation to promote tourism Those responsible for managing the affairs of nations have almost universally recognized the economic advantages of tourism . Tourism is an important sources for maximizing scare foreign exchange earning for not only the developing countries but of many developed countries of the world as well. In short the tourism phenomenon has attracted almost the entire world. Those responsible for managing the affairs of nations have almost universally recognized the economic advantages of tourism . Besides economic benefits to a country by way of earning foreign exchange and employment generations. Tourism also makes a tremendous contribution to the improvement of social and cultural trends of the country. Tourism emerged as the largest global industry of the 20th century. In the new millennium global economy will be governed by technology, telecommunication and tourism. Tourism has potentials to create the maximum numbers of jobs. According to an assessment, in India alone 100 million additional jobs will be created by the tourism industry in the next 25 years. It helps to earn valuable foreign exchange also. We should always remembered that development does not mean increase in GDP and GNP alone. It must add to prosperity and happiness. An important feature of the tourism industry is its contribution to the National integration and creation of harmonious social and cultural environment. It also encourages respect for preservation of Monuments and Heritage properties. It should help the promotion of arts, crafts, culture and bring a prosperity and sustainable development. Thus contribute to the creations of prosperous, healthy and peaceful world. By 2020, tourism is poised to be the single most important influence on global trade and commerce. Tourism is an economic activity and every activity depends on demand. Tourism also creates demand from its activities and we cannot ignore its importance in economical growth. Tourism is related with many industries also. Tourism plays an important role in enhancing jobs opportunity. According to Jag Mohan, ex- tourism ministers of India ‘On 10 lakh investment only 12 persons can be employed in any industry, but tourism industry can employ 47 persons on the same investment. † It is also believed that in INDIA only tourism is providing direct job opportunity to 93 lakh persons. The activities involved in travel and tourism industries are accommodation, transportation, restaurant entertainment and other services related with travel. The effect of improvement in travel and tourism is on travel and tour economy and hence whole economy. One more important fact that more employment opportunity can be speedily generated on lower costs. These opportunities are at small industries and local community level. These years there is tremendous like in tourism of all over the world. Even tourism has got the status of largest export industry of the world. There are only 16,800 foreign tourists in INDIA in 1951, which has increased to 1. 7 million in 1990 and further increased to 2. 75 million in 2003. The growth rate of tourism between 1990 to 2000 was 4. 46 percent annually. The growth rate achieved in year 2000 was much more than that of previous year. But if compare it with respect to tourist arrival, than share of India in world is constant at 0. 38 percent from 1995. In south Asia India has share of 42 percent of foreign tourist’s arrival in year 2000. It means that tourism growth rate of INDIA is 4. 7 percent as compare to 3. 2 percent average growth rate of the world in the time span of 1995-2000. But the Indian tourism growth rate of 5. 3 percent in 2000 was very little with compare to our neighboring countries like China (15%) , Hong Kong (10. 7%), Malaysia (27%), Thailand (12. 5%) , Makau (25%), Iran (28. %) . NATURE OF TOURISM : The term ‘tourism is used to describe the temporary short –term movement of people to destinations out side the places where they normally live and work. The word ‘TOUR’ has its origin from the Latin term ‘TORNUS’ which means lathe or wheel. The full turn of the wheel or lathe forms a circle or a circuit lust like this tour involves the process of a jou rney in which one returns to the starting point. The word ‘tour’ it is noted was first used to refer a journey in which one travels and visits a number of places in a circuit. A tourists leaves home to get away from routine grind but the end of all is that he is only eager to go back to his sweet home’ (Robinson, 1976) â€Å"Tourism is travel and visiting places for pleasure often involving sightseeing and staying in overnight accommodation. Regarded as an industry, tourism can increase wealth and jobs opportunities in an area although the work is often seasonal and low paid among the negative effects of tourism are traffic and people congestion as well as damages to the environment† (Hutchinson, 2002) Journey effected for pleasure and holiday, health business and trade, pilgrimage and social purposes, studies, training and research, foreign affairs and other similar purposes are covered under tourism. Tourism provides business for travel agents, transporters, hotels, retailed dealers and many others. It is a direct product of technological and scientific progress associated with industrialization ,urbanization and population explosion (Sarngadharan, M 1995) Travel and tourism has come to occupy a Prime position in the global economy. It generates foreign exchange to a considerable extent, boosts the economy and promotes peace and understanding between different countries. Tourism is an industry which has a social phenomenon with economic consequences. It gave a number of social and economic benefits. Leaving about the cultural diversities and lifestyles of different people helped in promoting international brotherhood as the millions who travel all over the world really build up on ethos of integration and relations. It is conglomeration of various industries and related activities forming a single entity and generates employment in a big way. There is no doubt that over the past two decades tourism has become one of the fastest growing industries in the world. For the collection of statistics it is usually necessary to determine a boundary which must be crossed by travellers if they are to be enumerated as tourists. This is frequently though not necessarily an international boundary Motivation to travel is many and varied and complicate the enumeration problems. Business travelers are usually included, while students abroad are excluded from most international tourist statistics. International tourism is dominated by the western world which constitutes both the major source of tourists and the most frequented destination areas (Williams and Zelinsky, 1970) . This feature of tourist flow is largely explained by the relatively high incomes of the western world which permit the luxury of the long distance movement and the availability of efficient transportation and superior accommodations which facilitates travel in comfort. Several developing countries possess the attraction of warm climates, interesting landscapes and cultural and low living expenses. Reduction in the costs of long distance travel has put them within reach of the more prosperous traveler in the western world. The large sums of money involved in international tourism have attracted the attention of many developing countries eager to gain a larger share in the expanding tourist trade. Tourism is seen as a source of income, foreign exchange, jobs and amenities for the resident population (United Nations Conference on Trade & Development, 1973) It may help to diversify economies, provide a stimulus for the development of other industries and contribute to the dispersal of economic activities. However it would be wrong to assume that tourism is a panacea for the economic ills of the developing world. In many cases tourism has been a mixed blessing and economic gains have only been achieved at social and environmental costs. Even the economic benefits have been over estimated. But this is particularly the where development has been based upon foreign capital imported labour and materials, generous tax incentives and expatriated profits. Tourism and recreation must be planned as carefully as any other industry should be minimized if maximum benefits are to accrue to the reception area. In India the travel and tourism industry has really come of age . India being one of the most sought after destination in the world the potential of the industry as a foreign exchange earner is well known. Being an employment –Oriented and labour – intensive industry and set to become number one in the world in these aspects. It provides high growth prospects for specialists. The industry is and has always been a good employer and pay packets are promising. Tourism is accorded the status of industry because investment is required for the infrastructure, it employs labour and profit is recorded. The significant feature of the tourism industry is that it employs a large number of women – educated, uneducated, skilled or unskilled, generate employment opportunities particularly to remote and backward areas and also contribute to national integration. Women actually outnumber men in hotels, airline services, travel agencies, handicraft and cultural activities. The tourism industry is a limitless industry with immense growth potential the world over. Tourism has a tremendous positive impact on the economic and social aspects of the host country. To reap the economic and social benefits of tourism countries are vying with each other to woo more international and domestic tourists. India is no exception, though to its achievements are not astonishing. It is very necessary to have a clear concept and more precise definition of tourism for more insight about the tourism. Tourism is a painless procedure for transfer of real resources from industrially capital surplus developed countries to low income developing countries. It is very important source not only maximizing scare foreign exchange earning not only developing countries but many development countries.

Analysis of Family Guy Essay

Back in the eighth grade at the Pierce elementary school, a few of my friends and I sat around the circular lunch room tables, the same ones where we sat every day of the year. Our discussion shifted to our favorite TV. shows. At the time, I was a big Simpsons fan and I didn’t really watch too many other shows regularly. We would go around blurting out funny lines and quotes from our favorite episodes or recall hilarious incidents. This was when two of my friends were talking about this show Family Guy. Even though I had never seen it, I could tell from their impersonations that it was a funny show. It had the same general theme as The Simpson, but had even crazier and funnier plots and adventures. When I finally saw my first episode in ninth grade, it was an instant classic in my list of favorite shows. From then on I would watch it as mush as it was on and I even got a collection of DVD’s which I watch regularly. This show goes into the life of an average family in Rhode Island. The characters include a mother and father, three children including two awkward and socially challenged teenagers and a talking baby, as well as the talking family dog. It makes fun of things we do every day that may not seem stupid, but really they are unnecessary and pointless. This show is filled with hilarious flash backs to past events, and includes lots of sarcasm as well as some dumb comments and actions by the unintelligent father, Peter. One of my favorite episodes is â€Å"Pre-Retarded†, where Peter finds out he’s retarded and goes around doing stupid, but hilarious things. He wins a game of Trivial Pursuit because his wife gave him ridiculously easy questions from the children’s version including â€Å"What color are fire trucks?† Peter struggles, but eventually gets it right and wins the game, convincing himself that he’s a genius. When he takes the test, he finds out that not only is he not a genius, he’s actually mentally retarded so he bulldozes the house in celebration. This episode is similar, but better than the rest of the episodes, because the plot is typical, but it is filled with more funny comments and random instances. Although this show may seem just like a basic comedy, meant to entertain children, it is really targeted at teens and young adults. The comedy makes fun of other stereotypes and gets away with things that may be considered racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic. It portrays these groups of people in the way they are supposed to be seen in society, but shows that the stereotypes aren’t true, by making the stereotypes seem stupid and exaggerated. In another episode when they are trying to get away from a bunch of southerners, the dog, Brian screams â€Å"Look, it’s a newly-married, interracial, gay couple burning the American flag†. It shows how ridiculous they look when they all scream, â€Å"Oh let’s get’em!†, and this way it makes fun of the stereotypes against southerners, and the group of people described in his remark, because the people would never actually do this. The reason I like Family Guy is because it is really one of the funniest, and most genius shows on television. The writers of the show are very intelligent, and smart about what they write. Although this show is hilariously funny, that is just one of its good qualities. It also sends an important ideas about how people are supposed to be seen, and tells us that stereotypes aren’t always true. It makes fun of average things and has long awkward pauses to show how funny our daily routines can be. Although this show may be offensive to some, I believe it is all in good humor. I am Jewish and in some episodes they do make fun of Jews reinforcing the stereotypes, that all Jews are rich accountants, lawyers, or doctors. This is just to make a point, and the writers do not really believe the things they show, because they exaggerate the stereotypes to make them look silly. In a way, this show is a lot like me. On the outside I really enjoy comedies, and basic entertainment that I can laugh about. There are also real issues that are important to me, and other things in my life that I care about besides just humor. This show is very provocative, but I believe it to be very funny as well as important, even if others may not share these same views. This program shows that I am a caring person and I am aware of the realities in life. Like Family Guy, I may be funny and joking on the outside, but we both go deeper on the inside.
